Educational charity launches OOH campaign to raise funds for the Enslaved Africans Memorial

17th October 2024

Memorial 2007 - the educational charity bidding to build Britain’s first memorial to remember enslaved Africans and descendants of the Transatlantic slave trade - has launched an outdoor advertising campaign in partnership with Ocean Outdoor.

Memorial 2007 is working to raise the funds to create the Enslaved Africans Memorial Garden in London’s Hyde Park. The centrepiece is a sculpture which will honour the courage of those who were enslaved and their struggle for freedom.

The bronze and granite artwork includes 14 feet tall statues on a plinth which is carved with key dates leading to the abolition of the slave trade.

To help raise awareness and the necessary funds, an outdoor advertising appeal is appearing on six large format Out of home screens across London including both Westfield retail and leisure destinations, Canary Wharf and in Leicester Square.

Timed to mark Black History Month, the space was given by Ocean.

£4million is needed to pay for the memorial. Organisers are asking for monthly donations equivalent to the cost of a cup of coffee to reach that target. Their aim is to provide an immersive educational experience using virtual and augmented reality, giving people online access to the Memorial as an interactive learning resource regardless of where they are in the world.

Founder Oku Ekpenyon said: “Memorial 2007 is working to give justice to a marginalised people whose enormous contribution to Britain has not been publicly recognised or acknowledged. The Enslaved Africans Memorial will ensure that no child of African heritage, nor the wider community, will ever again have to ask, ‘Where is our history?’.”
